Farrah Faucette,

more than a name

St. Johns County's deputy of the year honored for her work with canine unit

Before starting a regular 12-hour patrol shift, St. Johns County deputy Farrah Faucette puts on her bullet-proof vest, turns on her dispatch radio, dresses her partner in his harness and grabs his leash.

Faucette, 34, is the handler of Bodi, a 5-year-old German shepherd, one of the nine canine deputies in the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office. She is also this year's winner of the Guy White Award, the top honor given out by the sheriff's office each year.

"I'm doing exactly what I want to be doing," Faucette said. "This job is great. I can't imagine being happier doing anything else."

The pair cruises the streets of St. Johns County in a Chevy Tahoe, Bodi panting in the backseat.

"He knows when it's time to work. He gets all riled up when he hears the click of the [car's flashing] lights turn on," she said.  Full Article

 DARK ANGELS HONOR FALLEN HERO

The Detroit Dark Angels professional women's football team will honor and support slain Detroit police officer Brian Huff, 45 who was the first Detroit police officer killed in the line of duty in five years.  He leaves a widow and 10 year old son.   The Dark Angels will hold a fundraiser on Thursday, May 13 at US 12 Bar & Grill and will donate half of their game gate proceeds to the family on Saturday, May 15 against the Dayton Diamonds at Westland John Glenn High School.

Huff, a 12-year veteran of the Detroit police force was killed May 3 when he was met with heavy gunfire while attempting to enter a vacant house in Detroit.  Four other officers were also injured by gunfire but were treated and released from the hospital.

"We all understand that things like this can happen every day that we put on a uniform.  It is something that touches close to home for many law enforcement officers and I feel I'm doing what I'm supposed to do when you lose a brother or sister; you do what you can to help their family" said Dark Angels owner Chuck Lauber, himself a veteran Wayne County Sheriff's Department.

Dark Angel's star middle linebacker Yarlen Henry is also an officer with the Detroit Police Department.  "I feel that we are all like family both on the department and this football team,  so it makes sense for our families to honor and support my law enforcement brother who leaves his own family behind," said Henry.

For more information, visit www.darkangelsfootball.com  or contact owner Chuck Lauber at   800-505-8669. Tickets are $10 for entry to the game and we will also accept any additional donations.

Nightmare A Dream Come True For Female Gridders in Hartford

April 28, 2010

HARTFORD, Conn. - The first-ever home game for the New England NightMare -- the newest franchise in the Women’s Football Alliance -- turned out to be ... well, a nightmare for the home team.

The veteran-laden Philadelphia Liberty Belles rang up 28 first-quarter points en route to a 70-6 victory over the NightMare on April 24 at Dillon Stadium.

Despite the lopsided final score, the fact that the NightMare is a full-fledged female football franchise is a dream come true for the 25 women competing in shoulder pads and football helmets.

Even though they were being outplayed by the Belles, the New England players continued to give a 100 percent effort in a contest which had been decided early on when Philly’s speedy running back Marirose Roach scored four touchdowns in the first quarter.

“You can’t practice game experience,” said NightMare spokeswoman Vonda Menard. “The girls are optimistic, realizing there’s going to be some growing pains but there’s been no finger-pointing. It’s all about the team; we like to say we’re a drama-free team."  Full Article
